CIPR partners with National Citizen Service

The CIPR is partnering with National Citizen Service, a Government supported programme for 16 and 17-year-olds, to increase understanding about PR.

The partnership forms part of a wider education outreach programme undertaken by the CIPR following research published earlier in the year which found that young people lack the information and support needed to make an informed choice about public relations as a career.

The CIPR will now work with several partners, including NCS, to engage with students across the UK and teach them about the public relations profession.

Sukhjit Singh Grewal, CIPR director of professional development and membership, said: "We are delighted to be working with NCS to reach out to young adults and teach them about public relations. We hope that by engaging with students from an early age we can help them to better understand what public relations is and what it can achieve, and also increase the number of students who hope to enter the profession in the future."

Nick Hurd, MP, said: "NCS is now being recognised by universities and employers as a credible example of individuals wanting to develop their characters and skill sets in order to get their adult life off on the right footing."

FWD and Futureversity team up for London's underprivileged youngsters

FWD has once again teamed up with Futureversity, the programme that provides training and activities for deprived 16-25 year-olds, to create a PR summer school this August.

The summer school allowed a group of youngsters from Tower Hamlets to spend time in a City PR environment and learn about communications skills, financial PR and working with the media.

The objective of Futureversity is to give youngsters from deprived backgrounds the opportunity to make a positive use of the school holidays, which can otherwise become a significant time for kids to drift into gangs, crime and drugs. When the programme was launched in Oldham in 2009 in partnership with local police, it saw youth crime cut by 68% in the area.

City institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Allen & Overy and Morgan Stanley have been hosting Futureversity summer schools for many years, but FWD is the first PR agency to join the programme.

“We are delighted for the third year in a row to be a part of the Futureversity scheme," said Michael Gaughan, chief executive of FWD Group. "The City is a hugely wealthy area located right next door to some very deprived inner-city areas, and we are keen that we should give some of the kids from these areas the opportunities to gain skills that could help them to find jobs and benefit from employment opportunities the City and PR both offer."

Unity is paying a 'Golden Hello' of 5% of salary to anyone joining the company.

Gerry Hopkinson, Unity co-founder, said: "We are going to pay the commission to potential employees. If our staff recommend people, they too will benefit.

"Of course we’ve got nothing against recruitment agencies! We’re happy for candidates to share their 5% with the agents, however, we’d rather people came direct as we think we've found a better way and one that motivates and rewards the people who really matter – our future and current staff."
